Tetris Worlds had loads of new features. I feel I have to refer to previous versions of Tetris, even to Tetris on other platforms all together in order to explain and describe some of the new features. Starting out, it is Tetris, so you've got your standard game you've come to know and love. If you don't love or even like Tetris, then you should probably go to another page on this site. "The New Tetris" on the N64 I think introduced multi-player competition playing, allowing up to 4 players to see who can last the longest. Tetris Worlds kept the multi-player game, but provides it in two modes, arcade and knockout, which knockout mode being the familiar "send lines to your opponent" game. However, all players see everything at the same time. The advantage goes to the most skilled player who makes the least mistakes. You can also play against the computer in case you have no available competition to play against. As with "The New Tetris" for N64, much more updated and modern music is included, some is kind of odd.
Many other new features are also added, some of which you may or may not be familiar with. Of course, I've already mentioned the multi-player mode and "against the computer" mode. Many new features have been added, mainly as eye-candy and serve no real purpose except to distract you. This floating object called a "mino" pops in from time to time to "evaluate" you while you are playing. It's not disruptive and won't get in the way of the game unless you let it distract you. You can randomize worlds and music and customize the mino.
Other features from the N64 "Tetris Worlds" are the following:
Other items of interest include a "story" and a "maximum". Tetris can now be SOLVED. Yes, if you can complete Level 15, you have beaten the game. While you can beat the game, do not think you're going to need the expected "150 line" barrier, as Tetris Worlds does use the 10-lines/level rule. The story is not important, but sets the idea that there are "worlds" inhabited by the tetris blocks. In each of the 6 worlds, you play the game a certain way as each world contains a different challenge to be met.
No game is perfect and I do have a few gripes. First off, multi-player gaming was not reliable. With 4 controllers, it seemed player 1 was always controller 1, but the rest got mixed up. I don't like how you can't save your progress under your own ID as in "The New Tetris". Multi-player gaming must be experienced in order to appreciate the nuances of this title.
Overall, I like this game. I've seen some good versions of tetris and some really bad ones, evne major commercial releases. Tetris Worlds ranks as a good Tetris in my book. If you like Tetris, you'll like the new things added. If you are Tetris-curious or not that much into the game, Tetris Worlds may have enough things in there to lure you in.
