Sega's Game Gear: 8-bits of color gaming.
About the Sega Game Gear - a biased review by Chris Pickett
The Sega Game Gear is Sega's first real venture into the portable game
system marketplace. The Game Gear features a bright backlit color
display that looks great and can be played in total darkness. With a large
selection of game titles to choose from, the Game Gear has made its mark
on the portable gaming marketplace.
8-bits? What does that mean? How should I know? I'm an audio man, not a
video/graphics man. I've heard so many theories, guesses, and "facts" about
what the bits mean that I've learned to just ignore it. Bottom line: if I like
what I see, then that's good enough!
Now, let's get down to business. The Game Gear is capable of displaying up to
32 colors at once. I'm not going to actually count the colors, so I'll take their
word for it. If you use the TV Tuner accessory, you can view many more colors.
Again, don't ask me why, but it has something to do with the TV Tuner's technology.
The screen looks good, but on games such as Sonic, the blurring makes games
nearly impossible to play when at warp speed.
The Game Gear has a fairly large library of titles, but being a discontinued item
may make finding games a little difficult these days.
