Digimon
Aimed at boys, Digimon is one of the first generations of linkable fighting virtual pets. As the Tamagotchi is mostly aimed at girls, the Digimon is for boys. Fortunately, nobody seems to mind if girls or boys use one or the other. Using what Bandai calls "dock 'n rock" technology, your well-trained Digimon can go head to head with another Digimon for Digital Kombat. I'm sure some old lady is currently writing a letter to protest the violence in virtual pets, while the PETA folks are going to stage a protest in favor non-violent virtual pets. It's a TOY, get over it!
The story behind the Digimon is different, not that the story was important anyways. Tamagotchi come from cyberspace while Digimons come from the Megalithic Mainframe. If I didn't accidentally reset my dead Digimon, you'd have a nice picture of something to back-up this statement. Oops, oh well. Similar to the Tamagotchi, Digimons need care too, but are more robust virtual creatures, being more tolerant of neglect. Since stereotypically girls tend to be more nurturing, boys tend to be more aggressive. Because of this, the Digimon doesn't quite need the same amount of attention that Tamagotchi requires. Before you start flooding my mailbox with flames about potention sexist comments, please realize I'm talking from a scientific perspective. I've seen girls who couldn't nurture a booger into the world, and guys who are so non-aggressive they can't even ask "you want fries with that" while their paper hat is on crooked.
Those of you familiar with Tamagotchi will immedately notice the physical differences. This virtual pet is rectangular, and the buttons are vertical rathern than horizontal. As a result, the Digimon is larger than a Tamagotchi. Button functions are identical, with the buttons being A, B, and C respectively from top to bottom. This doesn't take too much getting used to. I know this is not a good comparison, but in my opinion, the Digimon screen is brighter and sharper. Perhaps mine had super-fresh batteries. Other minor differences include the reset button being on the front. Why? I don't know. ALSO, do not try and take out the plastic frame, you'll most likely break it. Lastly, on top is the "rock 'n dock" port, allowing for connection with other Digimons. I would suggest that if these connectors get dirty, any commonly available contact cleaner should do the job.
